Researchers from University of Connecticut Health Center have developed an autonomous lab-on-paper platform for multiplex gene diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2. The autonomous lab-on-paper can simultaneously detect nucleoprotein (N) gene and spike (S) gene of SARS-CoV-2 virus as well as human housekeeping RNAse P gene (an internal control) in a single clinical sample. It can detect 102 copies viral RNA per test within one hour. Comparing this technique against the traditional RT-PCR using 21 swabs of clinical samples, the paper has found similar levels of performance.
